Glendora Mudslides on the Horizon: Are you prepared?

Glendora, CA – December 2, 2014 – Homeowners and city crews in Glendora who were affected by mudslides during the last flash flood are preparing by stacking sandbags around their properties and clearing away trash bins, vehicles and other obstructions that could become trapped in debris flows in the event that the rain destabilizes San Gabriel Mountain slopes and triggers a mudslide. – KNBC

It’s our mission at AlertID to provide you with up-to-date crime and severe weather information. Please see our suggested tips below on how you can keep you and your family safe during a landslide.

  • Evacuate
    • Evacuate your home immediately and inform affected neighbors if you suspect imminent danger and it is safe to do so. Text SHELTER + your ZIP code to 43362 (4FEMA) to find the nearest shelter in your area (example: shelter 12345).
  • Stay awake
    • Many deaths from landslides occur while people are sleeping, so we suggest you stay awake and stay alert.
  • Listen for unusual sounds
    • Trees cracking or boulders knocking together might indicate that debris is moving in your direction
  • Stay alert
    • If you are near a stream or channel be alert for any sudden increase or decrease in water flow and pay attention to when water changes from clear to muddy. Such changes may indicate there is debris flow upstream, so be prepared to move quickly
  • Find Cover
    • If you’re indoors find cover in a section of the building furthest away from the approaching landslide underneath a strong table, and if you are outdoors you should move quickly away from its likely path and stay away from clear embankments, trees, power lines and poles.
